On the Pot

A couple weeks ago we bought a little potty for Nat. For a couple months, he's been informing us about when he's peeing or pooping in his diaper and soon after that he requests a"diaper change..." So, we thought maybe it was time for potty training. But we are totally inexperienced with this process! How do you go from an awareness of the diaper status to a desire to sit on that little pot? Any experienced Mamas and Papas please respond!

Anyhow, he was worried at first about his skin touching the potty and would only sit on it fully clothed. Now he's less worried and we try to practice on it everyday 1 or 2 times. Last week he actually peed in the little potty! Now he sits there in the buff (so cute) and stares down into the potty waiting for something to happen. He doesn't seem to remember the same stuff that goes on in the diaper could happen in the potty.

But we aren't too worried. He's still just a little guy. And he looks so precious there on his potty....thinking and contemplating and hoping. Check out these pictures!

Sounds like you are going about it right. When you get real serious I'll share with you what I did. Set a timer for 15, 20,or 30 minutes (depending on the size of his bladder) and take him to the potty when it goes off. Eventually he will go in it and that success is what keeps him wanting to go again. Of course we offered treats as a prize but that is up to you, praise works just fine. During that time I would just have them in cloth training pants and a t shirt so you would know when they went , this could get messy especially if you have carpet. But when he does wet even if it is in his pants rush him to the potty and sit him on it, tell him, "Its okay that he went in his pants but next time lets try to go on the potty." so he connects the two. Lots of juice during the day helps with more training opportunities.
That got kind of long. Anyway that is how it worked for Camron. Hannah basically trained herself because she wanted to go on the big potty like sissy. Hope that helps. It sounds like he might be ready but you'll be able to tell if you give it a serious try and it is not clicking just wait a while and try again later. It would be nice to that him trained before the baby came wouldn't it. Hope you are all doing well.
