Tom had some time off to celebrate Independence Day back at the beginning of July. We enjoyed fireworks here on the base (very close up)! Nathaniel still talks about fireworks "booming, loud, pretty fireworks, in the sky..." and prays about them frequently. His prayers are often the thoughts he processes from his day. It is interesting to hear what is significant to his little mind.
Anyway, after our American celebrations were over, we took a day-trip to Strassbourg, France. It is less than 2 hours drive from here. A very lovely drive and a very lovely city. We enjoyed a boat tour through the river and canals and some delightful French food (mmm...rich yummy cheese). The French language is nearly gibberish to us...we cannot seem to take it in. Hearing the French people speak makes Germany and speaking German feel rather "home-like." We can order from a menu in German, so that's what we did (since most folks know French & German, but not English).
In Strassbourg, there is a beautiful cathedral, with a very unique clock inside. The clock has all these little movable parts that touch one another and cause one object to fall and push another and another until finally the chimes of the clock are struck for the appropriate hour. It is kind of a cool lesson in cause and effect. Maybe when Nat is older we'll check it out again. The cathedral is Gothic in style. Gothic buildings have incredible details, often carved into the stone of the facade of the building. At this cathedral there were thousands and thousands of biblical characters and stories carved into the walls, arches, and even the buttresses on the top of the building!
There were lots of cute baby-stores in that city and my friend from church gave me a little map to all of them. I hope to return when more of them are open!
We hope you'll have fun on a little French adventure with the above photos.
